WHITE MAGIC
White Magic makes their return to the East River Amphitheater this September. The band released the acclaimed Through the Sun Door in 2004, with a new album slated for release later this year on Drag City. ” It’s clear that Billotte and Shaw listen to a wide variety of music, and if White Magic was once defined by the infinite possibilities of Billotte’s songwriting combined with the natural limitations of its instrumentation, in its new incarnation it is defined by an expanse of sounds so wide that it almost matches the diverse potential of the compositions.” (The Fader)

LOVE AS LAUGHTER
From Sub Pop’s writeup on Laughter’s Fifth, the group’s most recent album: “After a busy year (songwriter Sam Jayne recently appeared on Saturday Night Live with Modest Mouse and played the prestigious All Tomorrow’s Parties festival accompanied by J. Mascis) Love as Laughter returns with Laughter’s Fifth, the smartest, grittiest solo-rich classic r’n'r record you’ll get in 2K5. Informed by Thin Lizzy/T-Rex/early Tom Petty, this album’s brilliantly disheveled pop gems tell stories of dirty tricks, miscommunication, regret, bathroom graffiti and misadventure. Sam Jayne started Love as Laughter in 1994 as a solo project in the months after the dissolution of Olympia, Washington’s mess-rock legends Lync and his work with Beck on the One Foot in the Grave record. L/A/L went on to release two albums on K Records and two more on Sub Pop. The new record highlights Jayne’s tongue-in-cheek wit, manifesting itself in the form of sly musical allusions and lyrical innuendo. Laughter’s Fifth is full of the kind of loosely perfect pop songwriting that inspired Doug Martsch to cover “Singing Sores Make Perfect
Swords” (off L/A/L’s first album, The Greks Bring Gifts) on Built to Spill’s live record…. ”

HOME
Home released their latest album, Sexteen, in May, 2006. “The band is essentially a long-running, pressure-free pop project, on the side of a bunch of guys’ lives. That they’ve come close to perfecting their loose yet connected composition and playing styles, to the point where the guys seem to be finishing each other’s sentences and improving upon each other’s ideas, is somewhat astounding. There’s not really a moment that will have you skipping forward, and Sexteen’s hour goes by in a blink, and thereby demands your attention for the full shot. Whoever said “all you need is love” was probably right, and it’s that sentiment that carries Home back into the spotlight” - Dusted

PROFESSOR MURDER
From Pitchfork’s review of their recent Professor Murder Rides the Subway EP: “Despite the rhythm-heavy opener, Professor Murder aren’t a drum circle or conga line. To wit, “The Mountain” foregrounds the band’s melodic component: two bassists and, here, a purple-faced melodica blower. Bullhorn-shouted lines like, “50 dollar check, KRS-One,” aren’t exactly euphonious but they temper the percussion’s aggressiveness and probably incite live crowds to clap offbeat. (This must happen a lot at Professor Murder shows.) The mellowed-out “Free Stress Test” closes this eyeblink-quick song cycle, and it’s where the band finally showcases its songwriting muscle. The synths here lay down colorful, trance-inducing textures, as opposed to the cacophonous blips and whirls on “Champion”.”

THE END OF THE WORLD
From Flameshovel Records on the group’s upcoming album: “[The End of the World's] You’re Making It Come Alive expresses a sense of gravity without succumbing to melodrama, an earnestness that resists preciousness. The prominence of warm, spacious recordings, nostalgic turns-of-phrase, slide
guitars, and tambourines reveal the inspirations the band finds in times past. Even the expressive vocals of Marolachakis, whose voice recalls a slowly fading age of great singers, alludes to a strong sense of classicism, but still the band sounds distinctly modern in a way that eludes easy classification. His lyrics convey a world-weariness, but one that never succumbs to pessimism or disdain. There is always a confidence that a better world can be found. The End of the World is ever moving forward, using their music to aid their continuing search.”
