June 7, 2008: Lineup & Info [updated]
June 7, 2008 | 2 PM
UPDATE: The order for Saturday’s show, from first to last, will be as follows:
Soiled Mattress and the Springs
East River Amphitheater (Cherry St. @ FDR Drive, NYC).
>> LUCKY DRAGONS Lucky Dragons came together in the spring of 2000 in an
attempt to create a band that would never break up. The name is
borrowed from a Japanese fishing vessel caught in the fallout of a US
hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean that became a focal point for
worldwide anti-nuclear sentiment in the 20th century. With a constantly
shifting group of participants, each recording is a record of a
specific time and place, and of those present and active as a community
in the creation of the recording. For this recording, the time is
2007-2008, the place is California. The name of the record refers to
the landfill-island in Tokyo harbor where the original Lucky Dragon now
lives–”dream island”, and to the creation of imaginary
languages–”laughing language”–that can be used to express things our
own languages can’t. As with Lucky Dragons’ legendary live
performances, these recordings strive to create a space where community
and memory and ritual and perspective all come together as a crystal
and then vibrate and shatter.

>> ANIMENTAL Animental is an outlet for expression in its purest form,
drawing inspiration from animals. Animental explores the ideas of
innate reactions and behavior of animals vs. the programmed or
acceptable actions of the human animal. It hopes to empower the
individual who is performing as well as transport the audience to
another realm of reality. Inspiration, freedom, hope, creativity,
individuality, power, and feminism are things Animental hopes to
transpire. We use sound, costumes, movement, storytelling, props,
lights and what ever else the participants and performers bring. no
performance is like the other.

>> SOILED MATTRESS AND THE SPRINGS Soiled Mattress & The Springs are a
three piece instrumental band from New York City. The band consists of
cartoonist Matthew Thurber, who plays his sax with punchy and uplifting
vigour, Aviram Cohen, who lends insistent garage rock beats and
keyboardist, Peter Schuette whose sprightly hooks interlock with the
other instruments making for an intuitive leap into a world of upbeat
imagination.
different styles alongside a tasteful indulgence in humour and
playfulness. Their sound is characterised by exuberance, a sense of fun
and a love of melody, holding above all the power of the note in high
esteem.
