About the Theater

The East River Amphitheater is part of East River Park, one of the city’s largest parks, running along the East River from 14th Street to Chinatown.  The amphitheater is probably most famous for being used in the movie Wild Style, but it fell into disrepair over much of the 1980s and ’90s.  It wasn’t until recently that the amphitheater was renovated when the ABC television network gave Erin Brockovich four million dollars and six days to fix the to amphitheater as part of a television special.  During the amphitheater’s first post-renovation season in the summer of 2002, it hosted a few big concerts and much outdoor theatre, and 2003 saw ERMP’s first season of concerts.  Look for improvements to the park’s riverside promenade as well as increased handicapped accessibility to the amphitheater in the summers to come.
